14- Final Construction -- 2/25/01 - 3/2/01

2/25-- We had wonderful weather today: temps in the mid 50s and sunshine so I moved out to the front yard to work in the sun. It was a nice change from being locked in the garage all day
2/25-- The yoke is mostly carved: just needs some clean-up and finishing. I put together a page of details: Layouts and close-up pictures for anyone that wants to use this one as a model.
3/2-- All the pieces are built and mounted
3/2-- View of mounted seat and painter hole. Since my Gunwales are so small: Less than 5/8" and I'm not using any fasteners to hold them to the hull, I re-enforced them at the seat hangars. I'm using fairly beefy tapered hangar blocks to eliminate any seat sway.
For the painter hole, I glued a wooden block in the stems, and then drilled a 9/16" hole through the hull and the block. Then a 1/2" grommet (inset) was glued into each side of the hole. It has a wide flange and a 1/2" long barrel to line the hole. I like the idea of having metal as a wear surface for the rope. On the grommets I found, the flange was a little wide, so I spun it against a file to trim it down a bit.
